Now, modder DerKoun is putting together an “HD Mode 7” feature for the “bsnes” SNES emulator, and suddenly Mode 7 is impressing us all over again.Īrs Technica provides an excellent technical description of how it all works, but for the layman - DerKoun did a lot of math, and now everything’s prettier. But some games, like Pilotwings and RPGs like Final Fantasy VI, used Mode 7 to create an illusion of depth that was really impressive back then. It was really more of an interesting parlor trick than something that created dramatic new gameplay experiences.
